Intro text on ADHD and Coaching

There is a lot of misunderstanding about this disorder. Many people think it doesn't really exist. They tell you that you’re just lazy or don't try hard enough. Or, if you’re the parent of an ADHD child, they will blame your child's difficult behavior on your bad parenting. Don't believe it. ADHD is real. Abundant scientific research has shown that ADHD exists and that it is neurologically based (which is to say it is not the result of a moral failure or of bad parenting).

What is ADHD? It is an extreme version of normal behavior that starts at an early age and persists across multiple areas of one’s life. Many people are aware of the hyperactivity, impulsivity, and distractedness that characterize ADHD. But those characteristics are just the tip of the iceberg. Very typically there are also problems with:

learning disabilities and working memory
emotional control and tolerance for frustration
a poor sense of time
problems with sleep
problems with depression and anxiety

One of the most frustrating things about ADHD is that it is consistently inconsistent. Sometimes you can do what you need to do. Other times you just can’t. And it has nothing to do with how smart you are, how much you care, and how hard you try.

So that's the bad news. The good news is we also know it doesn't have to be that way.
